The Round Tower in Copenhagen, Denmark constructed in the 17^th Century as an astronomical observation tower offers a unique helical equestrian “staircase”. The helical design characterised by its sloping ramp of the “staircase” creates beautiful lines and curves punctuated by the light and shadow that streams through the windows that wrap around the circumference of the building.

When ascending the tower, the experience of movement through the helical corridor kinaesthetically connects the body and mind to a sense of constantly progressing and evolving with an uncertainty of not seeing what is “round the corner”. In all therapeutic models and more specifically in Internal Family Systems, the concept of the ever-evolving, always changing system, is at the core of therapeutic intervention. It is a nod to the fact that when working on our psychological systems we never know what is going to unfold, yet the organic nature of the process respects and acknowledges movement, progression and development.
